My husband and I were discussing slime the other day (how could we not), and he asked the golden question: "Why is slime so popular anyway? I mean, where did this all come from?"
In doing research for this website, I've come across a couple articles on the history of slime. This one from Slate talks about slime in the context of the Ghostbusters movies but is very thorough in its analysis of the topic. In 1977 Mattel came up with Slime, sold in little green garbage cans as a product to compete with Play-Doh. It was a huge hit, with the tagline "gooey, drippy, oozy, cold 'n clammy". Mmm... Unfortunately (?) the original Slime is not sold today, and all I can find from Mattel that is similar is a Ghostbusters Ecto Mini Ms. Slimer in Purple Slime. ?? It makes me laugh that something like this even exists, but I guess I can see kids enjoying it. (Click the link and tell me you don't at least smile.) :)
